Olfactive Description: Spicy, Pungent, Fresh, Woody, Dry, Dusty

A spicy, warm scent, Black Pepper essential oil is steam distilled from the fruit of a flowering vine called piper nigrum, also known as black peppercorns. If you’re considering your own handmade blends, Black Pepper is a well-loved middle note that helps bring together airy florals and heavy spices.

Approved for use in multiple products, we recommend this essential oil for use in candles, wax melts, tarts, and reed diffusers. It’s also safe for use in bath and body products like bar soap, liquid soap, lotion, and scrubs.

Candle Maker’s Notes:
Black Pepper essential oil makes our list of recommended essential oils for candle making. On our soy performance scale, this essential oil has one leaf out of three. So, while it is safe to use in candles and is true to the out-of-bottle scent, it has a light throw in wax.

Blends Well With: Bergamot, Lavender (Bulgarian), Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Clary Sage

Fragrance Wheel Family: Spicy

Vibe Check: Invigorating, Warm, Energizing

Lye Water Temperature 113ºF (45°C)

We experienced slight acceleration but no separation. The oils and lye water were slow to reach a light trace, so we continued blending to a medium trace. As we poured the soap into the mold, we saw it was thickening slightly. Hand stirring the oil in at a light trace should allow plenty of time to work on more detailed designs. After 24 hours, we observed the soap reached a partial gel through the center of the loaf. They had a very slight tan discoloration. The scent was strong. After 30 days, the discoloration remained a very subtle light tan. The scent had faded but was still distinguishable.
