Frequently Asked Questions
The fragrance wheel is a handy guide that helps you see how different scent families relate to each other—think of it like the color wheel you may have used in art class! It’s a great way to find complementary or kindred fragrance notes when creating your own blends for candles, soaps, room sprays, and more. If you’d like to learn more about blending, check out The Fragrance Wheel: Notes, Families, and How to Use It.
The wheel beside each fragrance shows you the dominant fragrance notes in that scent to help you decide what fragrance may blend well together. Learn more at The Fragrance Wheel: Notes, Families, and How to Use It.
Determine what notes you’d like to be dominant. Use a higher percentage of those fragrances than others. The percentages that you use are subjective. We recommend testing your fragrance blend with blotter strips to prevent waste. Learn how to use blotter strips in this tutorial.
Your total blended fragrance will always add up to 100%. Every time you add or remove a fragrance your blend will shift to include or exclude that fragrance.

We do not recommend going higher than the percentages above. These are guidelines based on our own recommendations and the IFRA certificate for each fragrances. Exceeding these recommendations can be hazardous.
The best way to know if your fragrance blend will work is to test it in your specific project—whether that’s candles, soap, room sprays, or something else! While tools like the fragrance wheel can help guide your choices and inspire creative combinations, they can’t guarantee how your blend will smell or perform in your chosen base. Every base can affect the scent differently, so don’t be afraid to experiment and make small test batches. Enjoy the process and have fun discovering your signature scent!
Great question! Whether your custom blend can be labeled as a CleanScent depends on the fragrances you use:
- CleanScents+ blended with CleanScents+ = CleanScents+
- CleanScents+ blended with CleanScents = CleanScents
- CleanScents+ or CleanScents blended with a fragrance that is not a CleanScent = Not a CleanScent
If you’re using CandleScience fragrances, even blends that aren’t considered CleanScents will still be formulated without phthalates, are California Prop 65 compliant, vegan, and cruelty free. So, you can always feel good about the quality and safety of your creations!
