behind the scents:

June 2019 fragrance oil revisions

We’re back again with another round of fragrance oil revisions and another glimpse of “Behind the Scents.” Similar to the previous round of revisions where we removed phthalates and updated the scent characteristics to suit modern tastes, this group is also on the cutting edge of both safety and performance.

For this launch, our initial goal was to remove all ingredients that require a Prop 65 warning. It didn’t take long for us to realize that removing those components wasn’t going far enough. Some ingredients may not currently require a Prop 65 warning, but there is a strong likelihood they will require it in the future. If we can stay ahead of the curve and maintain our track record of the most stringent safety standards in the industry, all the better!

As we always do when revising fragrances, we also took the opportunity to improve each scent in every way possible. Amongst other things, we looked at strength, performance in soy, scent profile, and in a few cases, the name of the fragrance. Sometimes a little rebranding is all you need!

Fresh Linen Odor Eliminator

We can’t tell you how relieved we all were to enter the fragrance testing booth containing said box and discover only the pleasant, clean aroma of Fresh Linen waiting for us. The scent profile of this odor eliminator is quite a bit different than our previous Smoke and Odor Eliminator fragrance, but it works even better. Those familiar with our Clean Cotton fragrance will find the scent of Fresh Linen very similar. So similar, in fact, that we even tested it as an odor eliminator and well...let’s just say it was unpleasantly obvious that Clean Cotton is a beautiful scent but definitely not functional as an odor eliminator.

Fresh Linen, however, most definitely is.

Frosted Juniper

Frosted Juniper is a fresh replacement for Merry Mistletoe that’s absolutely brimming with beautiful complexity. This is a crowd-pleasing scent that works for all seasons and is a perfect choice for the woodsy scent connoisseur fatigued by traditional pines.

With a fresh sweetness from the juniper berry and a light burst of grapefruit, this fragrance oil is particularly excellent for personal care products. We can imagine a line of luxurious Frosted Juniper scrubs and body butters for combating dry winter skin would be a huge hit!

Library

Library is a familiar fragrance in more ways than one. It’s the scent of cedar bookshelves and the leatherbound books carefully cataloged within; the overstuffed, well-worn leather armchairs and the dusty pages of infinite stories open on tables in front of them; the vague, lingering memory of pipe tobacco in the air.

It was also, in a former life, a version of Antique Sandalwood—if you ever worked with that scent, you’ll recognize the pleasantly dusty woodiness right away. Antique Sandalwood wasn’t a perfect sandalwood, but it had such a unique character we felt strongly about letting it find its own niche where it could truly shine. Once we launched our true-to-life Sandalwood fragrance, it was time to take another look at Antique Sandalwood’s story.

Give it a try—the Library is open!

Dragon's Blood

This intriguingly-named fragrance is also a celebrity favorite! And no, we aren’t talking about the one and only Sir Larry of Bilgewater, a living legend in his own right. Dragon’s Blood made the list of “What Todd Oldham Can’t Live Without” and we can certainly see why. As he puts it:

“It’s sort of stinky and aromatic at the same time, like a lovely mold.”

Now if that kind of endorsement doesn’t make you want to hunt down a vial of Dragon’s Blood for your very own, we don’t know what will!

(And for those who have not yet heard the tales of Sir Larry, enjoy the video below!)

Caramelized Pralines

Caramelized Pralines is an Original 25 fragrance, and it’s not hard to see why it’s been a mainstay all these years. It’s an ooey, gooey, guilty pleasure fragrance oil that is sure to become a go-to dessert scent (if it isn’t already!)

A word of caution: pouring candles and whipping up body care with Caramelized Pralines will have the neighborhood lined up outside your door begging to know the source of that delicious aroma. How’s that for a marketing opportunity!

Cinnamon Chai

Strong, true “black tea” notes are difficult to do well in fragrance. They often come out too powdery or artificial, without the distinct earthiness of true black tea leaves. That was what we loved about this revision of Cinnamon Chai right away—the undeniably true-to-life aroma of black tea.

Add in the complexity of cinnamon and cardamom, the spicy bite of peppercorn, and the richness of cream, and you have an authentic, inviting fragrance appropriate for every season.

Brown Sugar and Fig

For our update of this classic, much-loved fragrance, we knew we wanted to focus on bringing out the more complex, true-to-life notes and avoid the cloying sweetness of some versions of this scent. The result is a rich, darkly sweet fragrance that doesn’t just smell amazing out of the bottle, but performs better in soy wax than its predecessor, going from a 2 to a 3 on our rating scale.
